{"id":278,"date":"2019-06-29T12:04:03","date_gmt":"2019-06-29T12:04:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/centrewebsiteadmin.resultshq.com.au\/stge\/?page_id=278"},"modified":"2026-07-23T13:01:07","modified_gmt":"2026-07-23T03:01:07","slug":"parent-helpers","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/centrewebsiteadmin.resultshq.com.au\/stge\/parent-helpers\/","title":{"rendered":"Parent Helpers"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>Parent Helper Roles<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Supervising a Little Athletics meet requires a great deal of <strong>adult participation<\/strong>.\u00a0 Our Friday evening &#8216;meets&#8217; at St George might typically involve anywhere up to 350 young athletes across 18 or so Age\/Gender groupings performing from 4 to 6 events each in the evening.\u00a0 It is quite impossible for the Committee (all volunteers) to fulfil the large number of roles involved, and so most of the tasks involved in supervising athletics competitions fall to parents.<\/p>\n<p>For this reason, registering children in the sport comes with <em>an obligation to assist in the delivery of the program.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On\u00a0<em>average<\/em>, <strong>each family should expect to &#8220;put their hand up&#8221; to fill one of these roles about\u00a0every 2nd meet we hold.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0 Some parents generously participate much more often than that, for which we are very grateful.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/centrewebsiteadmin.resultshq.com.au\/stge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/101\/2025\/07\/St-George-Juniors-F2-SM-Volunteer-Story-cropped.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6340 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/centrewebsiteadmin.resultshq.com.au\/stge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/101\/2025\/07\/St-George-Juniors-F2-SM-Volunteer-Story-cropped-1024x534.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"534\" srcset=\"http:\/\/centrewebsiteadmin.resultshq.com.au\/stge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/101\/2025\/07\/St-George-Juniors-F2-SM-Volunteer-Story-cropped-1024x534.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/centrewebsiteadmin.resultshq.com.au\/stge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/101\/2025\/07\/St-George-Juniors-F2-SM-Volunteer-Story-cropped-300x157.jpg 300w, http:\/\/centrewebsiteadmin.resultshq.com.au\/stge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/101\/2025\/07\/St-George-Juniors-F2-SM-Volunteer-Story-cropped-768x401.jpg 768w, http:\/\/centrewebsiteadmin.resultshq.com.au\/stge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/101\/2025\/07\/St-George-Juniors-F2-SM-Volunteer-Story-cropped.jpg 1970w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Types of Roles<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4>Setup Roles<\/h4>\n<p>These roles commence an hour or two prior to the meet and will suit parents who can arrive early and especially those whose children are young and will finish their events early.\u00a0 They include tasks such as:\u00a0 spreading\/raking\/preparing the sand in the Long Jump pits, setting up High Jump mats, distributing the throwing implements to the appropriate location, deploying signage, setting up track facilities including Tents, tables, finish line timing equipment, start line flags &amp; so on.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Canteen \/ BBQ<\/h4>\n<p>These roles include Canteen servers &amp; BBQ cooks who&#8217;ll assist our (volunteer) Canteen Manager.\u00a0 We&#8217;ve structured the various shifts to match the typical &#8216;demand&#8217; profile of hungry athletes and parents!\u00a0 [We accept both cash and debit\/credit card payments &amp; we use the &#8216;Square&#8217; system to accept payments.]<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Supervising Track Events<\/h4>\n<p>These roles include Marshals who organise athletes onto &amp; off the track, and Starters \/ Recorders who use electronic equipment to start races, capture athlete identity and to capture race results in the race computers.\u00a0 For more detail, see:\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000\" href=\"http:\/\/stgeorgelac.org.au\/parent-helper-resources\/\">Parent Helper Resources<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Supervising Field Events<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Conducting each field Event (eg. Shot Put) requires 2 or 3 &#8216;helpers&#8217; to perform tasks such as retrieving the throwing implement, marking its landing position and measuring throws and jumps.\u00a0 We may define roles specifically for these tasks [eg. &#8220;Shot Put Helpers&#8221;], or we may require the Age Manager&#8217;s Helpers to fill the roles as they arrive at each Field Event Station.\u00a0 For more detail, see:\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000\" href=\"http:\/\/stgeorgelac.org.au\/parent-helper-resources\/\">Parent Helper Resources<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Age Managers &amp; Helpers<\/h4>\n<p>Each Age Group is led from event to event by an <strong>Age Group Manager<\/strong>, and a number of parent helpers (the number depending on the age of the athletes and the size of the group).\u00a0\u00a0For each Age Group, at the start of the season, we <em>appoint <\/em>an\u00a0<strong>Age Manager<\/strong> for the <em>season<\/em>\u00a0(through an <em>application process<\/em>).\u00a0 Their role is more fully described here:\u00a0 \u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000\" href=\"http:\/\/stgeorgelac.org.au\/age-managers\/\">Age Manager Role<\/a><\/span><\/strong> (where you&#8217;ll find the application form).\u00a0 \u00a0Additional helpers per Age Group will be recruited each week via Sign-Up.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;text-decoration: underline\">How to &#8220;SignUp&#8221; to fill a Role<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>We use the &#8220;<strong>Sign-Up<\/strong>&#8221; system to enable parents to choose the role (&#8216;duty&#8217;) they&#8217;ll fulfil for a given Friday evening competition, and to register that choice <strong><em>well\u00a0before<\/em><\/strong> coming to the ground.\u00a0 The Sign-Up duty list is usually published early in the week.\u00a0 [Note:\u00a0 Age Managers don&#8217;t use Sign-Up for <em>their<\/em> roles.]<\/p>\n<p>There are 2 ways to access the SignUp and choose a role:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Click the large &#8220;SignUp&#8221; logo you&#8217;ll find on every page or this website;\u00a0 OR<\/li>\n<li>Tap the &#8220;SignUp&#8221; button on the front screen of Team App.\u00a0 [To install Team App, see <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000\" href=\"http:\/\/centrewebsiteadmin.resultshq.com.au\/stge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/101\/2022\/10\/Team-App-Brochure-Customised-v4.pdf\">Team App Brochure<\/a><\/span><\/strong> ]<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve Signed-Up but then discover you can&#8217;t attend that Friday &#8211; please <strong>remove<\/strong> yourself from the SignUp so someone else can choose that role.<\/p>\n<p>++++++<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><strong>It&#8217;s important that you use Sign-Up<\/strong> to record your duty selection (and are present for the full duration of that duty) rather than just turning up at the ground with a &#8216;plan&#8217; to help.\u00a0 We do confirm in person that Signed up parents are in attendance at their Duty; however, we <strong>cannot<\/strong> guarantee to count your contribution if you&#8217;ve undertaken a duty but didn&#8217;t SignUp well <strong>before<\/strong> coming to the ground.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>++++++<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>Summary &amp;
